Automotive reviewers are constantly searching for new words to describe certain engine/drivetrain characteristics. Most recently I heard, "as smooth as olive oil." Well a cooking show this isn't, so I'll refrain from the epicurean cliches. Suffice to say, the 2003 Honda V6 is one of the finest engines produced anywhere in the world. In the Accord Coupe the power presents itself early and with plenty of low-range torque. As the RPM climbs smoothly past 4,000, the turbine exhaust note takes on a decided growl as the cam timing varies itself electronically in order to maximize the engine's output. Honda has perfected this system and termed it, "i-VTEC" which is short for, Intelligent Valve Timing Electronic Control.

Acceleration is brisk, linear and composed. In fact speeds beyond those legally acceptable seem to arrive effortlessly and without fanfare. That is the mark of a fine sport-coupe. No muss, no fuss, just smooth unrelenting momentum. The only fly in the ointment is dreaded torque-steer. This mechanical gremlin plagues most high-powered front-wheel drive cars. Although Honda does an admirable job of minimizing it, care is needed when accelerating rapidly from a stop or from low speeds, especially on uneven pavement surfaces that can exacerbate the problem.

I hope Honda will someday follow Audi's lead in applying all-wheel drive technology to coupes and sedans. Torque steer is all but eliminated in all-wheel drive systems that bias power delivery in favor of the rear wheels. (Honda has successfully applied this technology to the Pilot, and Acura MDX).
Keeping things on the straight and narrow the Accord Coupe is equipped with traction control. This system defaults to being engaged every time the car is started, but can be switched off once the engine is fired up. The high torque, even at low RPM, can easily overwhelm the front tires if the system is switched off. Maybe it's the rebel in me, or the immature 18 year-old fighting to free himself, but I don't particularly care for systems that govern and override my inputs. I understand its merits and support any technology that improves safety, but I'm grateful for the defeat button just the same.
