It makes sense that the Pathfinder would misbehave when pushed due to its rigid rear axle, a benefit when off-road. That said 5-link coil-springs are also out back while its front suspension consists of independent struts, which is why it tracks so well on the highway. Power variable-assist rack-and-pinion steering gives the truck its positive, progressive turn in and fairly quick reactions.

All said tackling Mosport International Raceway isn't what this conventional SUV was designed to do, that's best left to the new Murano. The Pathfinder is a talented 4x4, capable of leveling mountains and wading through knee-deep mud bogs. Its shift-on-the-fly 4WD system, standard in Chilkoot and SE models with manual transmissions, is a lesson in simplicity. That said the LE's multiple-mode 4WD System, also available on automatic equipped Chilkoot and SE models, is even easier to operate, allowing reliable and safe off-road adventure. A limited-slip rear differential assists the 4WD system, standard on the Chilkoot and SE, while VDC and Traction Control System (TCS) are available on the SE and standard on LE, but not the Chilkoot.

With safety features in mind, as standard equipment dual front airbags, All-Terrain anti-lock brakes (ABS) and child safety locks are included. Side airbags are optional on the Chilkoot and SE and standard on the LE. The Pathfinder forgoes 4-wheel disc brakes for rear drums, advantageous while off-road but limiting on-road braking capability. ABS is standard.

It's not as large as some of its competitors on the inside, incorporating a narrower cabin than is currently vogue. But still its cargo capacity is quite good at 1,076 L (38.0 cu ft) with the rear seats up and 2,407 L (85.0 cu ft) folded flat. Rear seat accommodation, with legroom at 808 mm (31.8 in) and headroom at 953 mm (37.5 in), is ample for all but human skyscrapers while the front seating area incorporating 1,059 mm (41.7 in) of legroom and 1,003 mm (39.5 in) headroom is more comfortable. The seats themselves fit me well and should be supportive over long distances too, plus the fabric looks as though it will stand up over time.
