There were some really neat aspects about the VUE that I enjoyed. First, I love effective cupholders, and what do you know, there are two working examples in front and two in the back. I also thought the door pockets were functional and roomy. This made it easy to store my CD wallet and other random regularly stashed items. And in the trunk, there is a storage bin on the left and right side, either ideal for fitting in a 4-liter jug of milk along with other items. Life just seems better when the jug of milk isn't rolling around the trunk like a bowling ball!

Although I am familiar SUVs in general, I felt in foreign waters when initially entering the VUE. What do I mean by that? Well, perhaps its Saturn's way of being "different," but some instruments, such as the power side mirror button, was almost unidentifiable. And what's more, it's stuck in the middle of the centre console, hardly intuitive. But maybe that's my mistake for not reading the owners manual before attempting to figure out what all the buttons mean.

The shifting, or lack thereof, was smooth and unnoticeable, unlike some other CVT equipped cars I have driven. (Photo: Alexandra Straub, Canadian Auto Press)

I also found it harder to put the shift knob into gear than other SUVs I've tested, due to the shifter being quite stiff. When I looked at my shift lever I noticed an "I" and an "L" in place of what would normally be "2" or "1." It threw me off at first but it all makes sense in the grand scheme of things.

The engine is also very revy, and resultantly a bit on the noisy side. But I suppose that just comes with the small-engine attempting to pull 1,518 kg (3,340 lb) SUV territory. I am a fan do-it-yourself gear changing but I think Saturn did a great job on the transmission. The shifting, or lack thereof, was smooth and unnoticeable, unlike some other CVT equipped cars I have driven.
