But aficionados of the German brand are usually more interested in driving dynamics than practicalities, at least first and foremost. The X3 will serve up standard 3-Series power, starting with a base 184-hp 2.5-L inline-6 in the X3 2.5i. The X3 3.0i, the first engine to arrive in Canada, will get the 330i sedan's 225-hp 3.0-L I-6, respected as one of the smoothest engines currently in production. The top-line X3 should be capable of a terminal speed of 210 km/h (130 mph) and 224 km/h (139 mph) with the available Sports Package, that includes a sport-tuned suspension and upgraded tires capable of higher speeds. A 6-speed manual will be the standard transmission for both engines while a 5-speed automatic gearbox will be optional.

The larger X5, revered as the road holding benchmark SUV since its inception, can still compete amid an onslaught of new competition despite its age. The X3 should improve on even the X5's handling performance, providing at-the-limit control and poise even when pushed beyond normally reasonable lateral acceleration levels.

A recently developed intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system reportedly sets new agility standards for all-wheel-drive vehicles on the whole. Designed to maximize grip, reducing both under and oversteer, the system immediately responds to road surface changes to optimize traction. Infinitely adjustable, xDrive varies the distribution of torque between front and rear to improve overall balance and composure. Maximizing grip obviously adds to the X3's safety, further enhanced by BMW's DSC stability management system.
