That same engine should do wonders with the CTS, already capable of playing with the best in its class for handling. With 400-hp on tap at 6,000 rpm and a maximum of 390 lb-ft of torque delivered at 4,800 rpm, zero to 100 km/h is said to arrive in less than five seconds, controlled via a heavy-duty Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission connecting through to a 70 mm prop shaft and limited slip differential configured with a 3.73:1 final drive ratio. Its performance should eclipse the current crop of European rivals, an impressive feat.

Still, at 3,847 lbs it's about 500 lbs heavier than these rivals, although as always acceleration is all about power to weight ratio. But handling isn't. While a few extra pounds can be a benefit at autobahn speeds it could negatively affect at-the-limit cornering on tighter, twisting roadways. To counteract this Cadillac has made sure the suspension is upgraded beyond its exclusive 7-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels and P245/45WR18 EMT Goodyear performance grade tires. Specially tuned shock absorbers and larger diameter stabilizer bars, 26.5 mm up front and 21.0 mm in the rear, enhance vertical and lateral control, while spring rates at both ends are increased by 27 percent. GM's StabiliTrak traction and yaw control has also been made standard - a good idea.

At least as important the CTS-V gets upgraded brakes. The standard CTS 4-wheel vented discs are increased in size to 355 mm by 32 mm on the front corners and 365 mm by 28 mm out back. Not the regular GM hardware, the 4-piston calipers are supplied by Brembo, the most recognized name in performance brake parts. Of course anti-lock (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) are included standard.
