At 1,840 kg (4,057 lbs) the still very substantial 612 is 60 kg (132 lbs) lighter than the outgoing 456M. The lost weight is the result of extensive use of aluminum, comprising the space frame - the first time incorporated into a 12-cylinder Ferrari - body panels, suspension componentry and, of course, engine. The aluminum has helped to stiffen its overall structural rigidity as well, by 60 percent no less, reducing cabin noise and enhancing safety in case of collision, among other benefits.

The fact that the 612 is also larger than the previous model inside is an added bonus, with no negative side affects. Front and rear legroom has reportedly been increased measurably, aided by the 139 mm increase in overall length when compared to the 456M. Added to the legroom are improvements in head, shoulder and hip room, turning the rear seats from what were fairly cramped quarters into passable accommodation for two adults. Also important Ferrari has upped trunk volume by 25 percent over the 456M, now achieving 240 L (8.5 cu ft). If the marque's own luggage is purchased, five pieces will fit snuggly in place or rather, the all important two golf bags.

The 612 boasts a mid-front layout, placing the engine directly behind the front axle, and a 6-speed mechanical transmission, with either conventional and next-generation electro-hydraulic shifting available. (Photo: Ferrari)
Of course a lighter curb weight directly reflects road-holding, in a positive way. The Ferrari boasts a mid-front layout, placing the engine directly behind the front axle, and the 6-speed mechanical transmission (the F1A not FIA), with either conventional and next-generation electro-hydraulic shifting available, plus the differential in the rear to optimize weight distribution (46 percent front: 54 rear) and lower the car's center of gravity.

The 612's suspension, specifically, gets active damping and CST stability and traction control, applied to this model for the first time in Ferrari history. The wheels are 5-spoke alloy, of course, shod with 245/45-18s on the front and 285/40-19s on the back.
