| The 2004 Grand Cherokee won't be changing much inside, which is no bad thing considering its continual progression in interior quality since mother company Daimler-Benz, now DaimlerChrysler, took over. The wood in this Overland edition is real, the leather supple and all plastics and switchgear is first rate. (2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland interior shown). (Photo: DaimlerChrysler) |
Both the standard 4-speed automatic and optional 5-speed automatic transmissions are thought to continue through to 2004 as well, as they offer benefits in either cost or performance respectively.
Four-wheel drive Laredo models now get a new Quadra-Trac I single-speed transfer case, derived from the Quadra-Trac II transfer case at no extra charge. The new more cost effective system has been designed for those who only stay on pavement or light duty gravel roads and don't tow heavy loads. It's a user friendly, convenient system that doesn't need the driver to manipulate the drivetrain (i.e. shift levers) to engage 4WD. Instead it automatically responds to a loss in traction and engages the wheels with traction seamlessly, without notice. While this all-new system is perfect for slippery conditions 4x4 buffs can rest assured their beloved Select-Trac, complete with its low range gearing, will remain the standard transfer case on 4WD Laredo models.
