The new V6 is down on torque when compared to the old V8's 239 lb-ft, but up on power when put side by side with the outgoing 8-cylinder's 202-hp. Fans of the brand will be most disappointed at the new engine's lack of V8 rumble, but others will appreciate a V6 engine that is much more suitable to sports car driving dynamics. It's a toss up, and a bit of a gamble for the marque's U.S. sales division.

With the U.S. market in mind Morgan's relationship with Ford is causing some to speculate that the 4.6-L V8 might be in the cards for a future Plus 8. Until such a possibility takes to the road, the Plus 6 is all the sports carmaker is offering. Production of the Plus 6 began in April of 2004, with the first sales taking place a few months ago.

A new Roadster has been announced that makes use of the new engine, with first deliveries expected by next spring. On the subject, Sales and Marketing Director Matthew Parkin said, "We have taken our time to develop this car, and the results have certainly been worth the wait. The Roadster is quite simply going to blow people's socks off. It's the perfect antidote to all that's bland in modern motoring, and will deliver more fun per mile than anything else on the road - except perhaps another Morgan."

Parkin isn't exactly humble about the new Roadster's capabilities, but I have little doubt of his claims. Morgan has been satisfying sports car buyers for decades, and it isn't about to forget about its core values and move backwards now.

While power has been increased, the lightweight car gains most of its loyal fans via nimble handling.

"With a low centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution from the engine being placed well back from the front axle, the car is very easy to place on the road and has a really good turn in. This car is going to be fantastic to drive on the road, and will make an excellent track day car, too."
