With the Relay, Saturn can intercept many of the first-time buyers to the mid-van segment and attract those who might be interested in an import brand, she said. "Import mid-van buyers on average are younger and more affluent; more than 70 percent have children under age 16, versus approximately 50 percent for domestic mid-van buyers."

With its ability to carry seven people and plenty of cargo, the Relay is the first vehicle in the Saturn lineup that can carry both passengers and cargo, Lajdziak said.

The mid-size van can sit two people in front, two in the center and three in the third row seats. There are storage compartments on the backs of the first and second row seats that provide a place to put headphones and other small items.

The second row seats can fold down and flip forward, while the third row folds flat, even with the floor of the trunk that has a removable cargo storage compartment. The Relay on display only had a prototype of this storage box that could not open, however, and was not made with all the finishing touches that will go into a production model.

The watertight storage compartment is supposed to hold milk containers, 12-packs of beverage cans, and grocery bags. The forward edge of the divider is cut out to create a long, left-to-right compartment, capable of holding lengthy items such as golf umbrellas.
