cars are basically downgraded and re-badged Volkswagen products, rather than the somewhat archaic rear-engined Estelle that was previously sold here, followed up by the slightly more competitive yet less attractive Favorit. Unlike the Estelle, SkoCar, the Canadian Skoda importer, and M.I.K Automotive, the U.S. Skoda dealer from California which also purveyed the Bertone X1/9 (previously Fiat X1/9), made sure the Favorit would meet North American safety standards when it was still in the design stages. Of course, it wouldn't take much to refit the VW-based Skoda lineup to North American standards now.
Still, don't hold your breath

Skoda fans, if there are any out there in Canada anymore. Volkswagen has too many problems of its own in North America to even consider resurrecting a brand that many may still be harboring grudges over. Yet, if its products, such as the Touareg, Phaeton and upcoming midsize, rear-drive 5-Series/E-Class competitor, continue to move the brand up-market, Volkswagen Group may need to bring a less expensive alternative brand, such as Skoda or its Spanish Seat division, to market here. Skoda, which enjoys a more global following, would be the more likely alternative. Hmmm... now that's something to think about isn't it?
