The new platform also means major changes to the car's suspension system. While the front layout remains the same with

double wishbones, the rear adopts a more complex multi-link system that's similar to the RX-8's. Engineers honed the car on the Nurburgring, perfecting its springs, dampers and steering to deliver a confidence-inspiring feeling that is both forgiving enough for beginners, and capable of entertaining more advanced drivers. Mazda also used aluminum in some key areas in order to reduce unsprung weight, ensuring the car is light and lively.

As much as Mazda stresses Kinba Ittai with the MX-5, it hasn't displaced the brand's other favorite motto, "Zoom-Zoom". Power comes from two all-new engines which have been derived from the now famous MZR engine line. Both are a testament to Mazda's engineering skills and overall craftsmanship, with double overhead camshafts, four valves-per-cylinder and aluminum block and head. In terms of technical goodies, both motors feature variable valve timing, variable intake manifolds and an acoustically-tuned exhaust system that features a straight pipe to reduce back pressure.

manual gearbox, the stand alone shifter for this basic-spec layout. This motor is also only available in Europe, so in the interest of our domestic market, we'll move on to the bread-and-butter powerplant. The 2.0-liter inline-four will be the mainstay in all global markets. It is targeted to make at least 160 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque with minor variations depending on where the car will be sold. Standard is a short-throw six-speed gearbox with close-ratio gears, while those who prefer a more relaxed drive can opt for an Aisin-sourced (Toyota's transmission subsidiary) six-speed automatic with paddleshifts.
