The X3 Hybrid uses BMW's new Active transmission. This system incorporates the 6 forward driving gears, the electric motor together with two clutches and the vehicle's complete electronics. This transmission is mated to an inline 6-cylinder equipped with direct high-precision injection. This system increases engine efficiency and torque.
The trend at the moment is high-performance Hybrid vehicles. The X3's Supercapacitor, transmission and engine combine for a 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds all the while reducing fuel consumption by 20% over the regular X3.
The transmission is designed to provide a boost of power to every gear once they are engaged. This way, effort and consumption from the gas engine is reduced. The batteries are recharged through a brake force regeneration also located in Active transmission.
