"And the AWD system, just like traction and stability control, operates with precision and transparency; best of all, I never found it intrusive, added Amyot. You enjoy full control and the responsive steering helps a lot. Also, the fact that you can manually alter the vehicle's dynamics (pavement, gravel or snow) to vary torque distribution makes the whole experience even more precise and rewarding."

Did you say 'rally car DNA'?

We had the opportunity to assess the sporty attributes of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo on a series of snow-covered roads that once served for rally races. Even when skidding or on more damaged stretches, the sporty Japanese kept its cool and performed almost flawlessly.

A tourer? Not really
With this new generation, Mitsubishi claims to be right up there with such acclaimed premium cars as the BMW 1-Series and Audi A4. But while the 2008 Lancer Evolution proves sportier than both, it lacks their overall comfort. The ultra-firm suspension is great for aggressive driving but you need to know how to handle the car to ensure passenger comfort.

The dashboard is understated though simplistic, while the exterior styling is interesting though not particularly innovative (the huge rear spoiler and front air intakes basically sum up the visual differences). Also, I found the list of features and accessories to be somewhat limited.

On the plus side, however, the standard Recaro sports seats offer exemplary comfort and support. Likewise, I have to applaud Mitsubishi for offering that much room in the back -- not many sports cars can brag about that.

So, does the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution live up to its reputation? Absolutely. In fact, it even exceeded our expectations in terms of performance, handling and construction. Despite multiple upgrades, the car did retain its cat-like character. Unfortunately for Mitsubishi enthusiasts, it's still far from being an everyday dream car. Of course, people buy the Lancer Evo for its fun-to-drive personality, pure and simple. In that regard, bravo!
