The all-new 2011 Explorer is waiting in the wings, with its new uni-body construction and futuristic interior. So 2010 will be the last year for a truck-based body-on-frame Explorer.

Its standard V6 engine is the not-too-young 210-hp 4.0 litre, while the optional V8 is the 292-hp 4.6-litre V8 of Mustang fame. The V6 is hooked up to a 5-speed automatic, while the V8 gets a 6-speed.

The model range continues with XLT ($37,499 and up), Eddie Bauer ($43,899 and up), and Limited ($49,799).

With Explorer in a holding pattern, there are few changes to report for model-year 2010. There are some new colours, and a new XLT Sport Package, which promises a unique "black" outside and inside look, with black wheel lips and fascia accents, black accented step bar, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, black 3-bar grille, headlamps with blackout treatment, charcoal seats, and white instrument cluster.

Standard is a part-time 4x4 system (with low range), and optional is full-time all-wheel drive (also with low range). If you're looking for towing power with three rows of seating and real off-road capability, Explorer is your man. If you're looking for fuel economy, look somewhere else or wait for the new Explorer.

With the available towing package, which includes frame hitch, special axle ratios, and wiring harness, the V8 Explorer can tow up to 7,160 pounds.

All this capability doesn’t mean Explorer can’t also offer a surprisingly amount of luxury and convenience features, such as quad bucket seating, power-fold third row seating, leather everything, and rear DVD entertainment system.
