The Explorer Sport Trac continues to play the half SUV/half pickup card, with a front and rear seating section like the regular Explorer, but with a small truck bed (just over 4 feet). The available hard tonneau cover is lockable and weatherproof.

Like the regular Explorer, the Sport Track is built on a frame-based truck platform and a north-south rear-drive powertrain.

The model range starts at XLT, which asks $35,699 for the 4.0-litre V6 version, and $37,199 for the 4.6-litre V8 version. The V8-only Limited model asks $42,299. All the above models have a “real” 4x4 system, where drivers select RWD, 4x4 high, and 4x4 low. Two-wheel drive versions are no longer available. Also deleted is the V6 Limited.

But back into the fold for 2010 is the Adrenalin model, which has all features found on the limited, plus 20-inch polished wheels, special black-theme exterior features, ground effects body work, running boards, Charcoal IP and console, Stone-coloured headliner, and unique leather seats, which are also heat-able.

Adrenalin is exclusively fitted with the Ford AWD system, which requires no input from the driver, and always sends torque to all four wheels, and can vary the torque depending on wheel slippage.

An all-new unibody Explorer will soon arrive, so get these hardy Sport Tracs while you can. These 2010 versions benefit from some across-the-board Ford updates, such as the next-generation navigation and SYNC systems.

Notable options include a cargo cage “bed extender” and a Class III towing package.
