Both trim levels of this Mazda5 are powered by 2.3L 16 valve 4-cylinder engine. You can choose from a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic 'sport' transmission. I have the automatic and am pleased with its 153hp. I would have liked to try the manual - I know that it's not the big seller but I think this Mazda5 would have been fun to try out shifting on my own!
The GS starts at $20,495 and the GT retails for $4,000 more. It will cost you $1,200 to get an automatic transmission or air conditioning. Both the Comfort Package and Luxury Package will set you back an additional $1,295 each.
They no longer have an illuminated glove box - which I admit that I don't use very often. But it's kind of like trying to find something at the bottom of your purse. With no light, in the dark, finding things in the glove box could be difficult.
When this vehicle first hit the market I wasn't really into it. I didn't think it would last as long as it has. But it has a great ride with functional storage without being too big. They have made a few nice improvements this year, so driving the GS model has gotten a bit more comfortable. My mom bought a Mazda5 a few years ago and she loves it! The one thing I would like to see is AWD - here in Canada, I think it would be a fantastic option and really make it a multi-activity vehicle.
As I was just finishing writing this review, I found out that there is going to be some changes to the Mazda5 in 2011: They are updating the exterior styling and I think it looks much better! The biggest improvement is going to with fuel economy, decreasing to 7L/100km from 10! In fact, Mazda is aiming to increase fuel economy across its global line up 30% by 2015.
The Mazda5 is a functional vehicle with a strong following. It is a pretty great vehicle now and it looks like it might be getting even better.
