The sun seems to be setting on the competent, but shy Galant. It’s Mitsubishi’s Camry/Honda challenger, though it’s hardly been a threat. It debuted in its current-generation format in 2004, and for 2010, it is only available in one model — the 2.4-litre I4 equipped ES — which was last year’s base model. So no LS or Ralliart model, and no V6 model of any stripe.
But for $23,998 you get a well-equipped, refined, front-drive, five-passenger four-door midsize sedan, uncluttered by extravagant styling or a top-flight powertrain. The engine produces 160-horses and the automatic is a four speed.
Standard features include a 140-watt 6-speaker stereo with MP3 playback capability and auxiliary input, manual air con, rear heater ducts, trunk pass through, sport wrap steering wheel, cruise, power accessories, remote keyless entry, and 6-way driver's seat.
The ride is a bit on the cushy side. The platform remains competitive in terms of integrity and stiffness, featuring a front subframe and a rear suspension with hydro-formed cross members, which all help to isolate NVH.
For safety sake, Galant features standard side curtain air bags, front-seat mounted side bags, an engine immobilizer, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD). For 2010, stability and traction control have also been made standard.
Like most Mitsubishi products, Galant features a “10-5-5” warranty: 10 years or 160K on the powertrain; 5 years on the body; 5 years or 100K on everything else;
New exterior bits include 16-inch alloy wheels, blacked out headlamps, side air dams, and front grille. New interior bits include seat fabric, black woodgrain trim, and auxiliary input jack.
