SUV or wagon?
I know, I know. The new-generation Subaru Forester is larger in every dimension and definitely looks more like a sport utility vehicle than ever — and far from its old boxy wagon design.

The thing is, once behind the wheel, you no longer feel that truck-like attitude conveyed by the outer shell. It’s almost as if you’re driving a run-of-the-mill sedan/wagon.

So, I’m asking you this: is the Forester a true SUV based on looks or a tall wagon based on driving dynamics?

New design language
The new Forester is bigger. Much bigger. In fact, it’s longer, wider and taller than the previous model, which bowed out in 2008. Ground clearance has been increased, too. Overall, this Subaru looks more and more like the big guns of the compact-to-midsize SUV/CUV segment.

Still, one could fault the automaker’s designers for being a bit too conservative, although there’s a nice impression of balance and togetherness in the new package. As a result, the Forester appears much smaller and tighter than it actually is. Get up close and you’ll be surprised.

The great news is that the extra girth almost entirely translates into extra passenger room and cargo capacity. Complaints will now be few and far between… except when it comes to the seats. While ample enough, they clearly lack comfort and quality finish, at least as far as the base model is concerned.

The controls and most of the dashboard also disappoint in terms of refinement and visual appeal. Using them is child’s play, however, thanks to a functional layout and friendly ergonomics. And I must admit that the blue backlit gauges are a nice showcase of Subaru’s newfound flair.

In the back, the generous trunk offers wider access thanks to a new suspension design that keeps a lower profile. Gone are the awkward, space-eating stacks on each side of the cargo area .Time to load some more luggage!
