At the Toronto show, the BMW 335d was awarded AJAC’s “Best New Design Award” for 2010. It obviously has the right combination of aesthetics, function and brand essence. But it also has a wonderful diesel powerplant, making it another great ambassador for the “clean diesel” cause.

The Prius is in the news lately for things other than its fuel efficiency. But that overshadow its accomplishments. Once again, EnerGuide named it the most fuel-efficient vehicle of any class. With a city/highway L/100 km rating of 3.7/4.0 it easily beat the two-person 1.0-litre smart minicab (5.9/4.8). At Toronto, Toyota showed us the next phase of Prius, a plug-in version currently on test fleets. Its new lithium-ion battery gives the Prius an “all electric” range of only 21 kms. Highway traveling eats up batter juice like crazy, so Toyota optimized this Prius for city traveling and fast charging. Time will tell if it’s the right strategy, but hats off to them for keeping the discussion going.
