The secret weapon
Comfort to burn
Road trip? The G37 will cruise at virtually any speed you’d care to visit in stable, planted comfort. The instruments are gorgeous, and much of the interior is impeccably trimmed and assembled. The whole thing is leather-lined, and feels buttery smooth and very nicely bolted together. Quality levels here should rival any pricier competitor, any day of the week.

On the highway, it’s quiet without being isolating, and comfortable without riding like a giant glob of pudding. There’s even Bose audio, though the real stereo system, and perhaps the very best part of the G37, is under the hood.

World-class V6 at your service
Nissan’s VQ37VHR V6 engine is a 3.7-litre, four-cam unit that comes from the most award-winning engine family of all time. It makes 328 horsepower here, spins eagerly to 7,500 rpm, and sounds absolutely magnificent.

Get it screaming, and it flings the G37 along with urgency that nearly feels inappropriate for its looks and character. Power output is more than adequate, and the seven-speed automatic with paddle shifters is very responsive – as far as paddle-shiftable automatics go, anyhow.

Sporty comfort
The way this car feels at the tips of your fingers and toes is bang-on. It’ll make quick work of your favorite winding back road with no drama or fuss, exhibiting a laid-back effortlessness that speaks to the G’s blend of comfort and performance.

Those inclined to hit a road course for some weekend lapping will find adequate power, good brake feel with more than adequate fade resistance, and a confidence-inspiring feel to the steering. The latter feels nicely matched to the G37’s chassis tuning: heavy enough to pull drivers into the experience help them lock down on their line, but light enough to encourage some exploration of the machine’s limits.

And with the rear-biased AWD system on board, there’s plenty of drama-free grip for corner exit alongside a distinctively rear-drive feel in response to throttle inputs. Toss on a set of race pads and decent performance tires, and you’ve got a family sedan that’ll entertain on a road course, while getting there and back in air-conditioned comfort.

As tested, this G37xS lists for $52,290, including the High Technology Package.

Complaints

Gripes are minimal here. The cabin will prove snug for taller drivers, and it does get thirsty if you can’t fight off the temptation to rip through the first few gears like Christmas-morning wrapping paper.

But all said, the G37 looks, sounds and feels great – and compared to some of the European competition, it’s actually a heck of a bargain. Best of all, the wife doesn’t need to know it’s actually your racy dream sports car in disguise.
