The G37xS is Infiniti’s upscale performance sedan that slots beneath the larger and more luxurious M37 sedan. This week’s tester is the all-wheel-drive version of the G sedan, which is denoted by the “x” in the nomenclature. The “S” represents Sport.
The Sport Package adds a stylized front fascia and revised side sills. Also included are aluminum pedals, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, and a sport steering wheel fitted with magnesium shift paddles. There are plenty of other performance-related attributes held by the G37 but let’s begin with its svelte lines and sport-oriented cabin.
Visual flair is maintained for 2011
Little has changed for 2011 yet the G37 sedan looks remarkably fresh and up to date thanks to Infiniti’s new design language, which emphasizes curves and creases collectively. I admire the G37 for its sculpted hood and attractive body proportioning, however, despite a muscular stance and distinctive lines I’m not its biggest fan as far as appearance is concerned.
Flair is found within the G37 as well, where brushed aluminum and soft-touch materials combine to spoil the eye and hand. In addition to its sporty appearance, the cabin is bestowed with several driver-centric features not often found together.
First on the list is a tilt/telescopic steering column that tilts in unison with the instrument pod. This feature keeps the entire gauge cluster visible to the driver regardless of steering wheel positioning. Often, I find that my desired steering wheel height causes the rim of the wheel to intersect with my sight line to the gauges; not so with the G37.
Next on the list is the extendable seat cushion built into the two front perches. Long-legged occupants—and I like to think that I’m one—truly value this most basic but seldom available function. And lastly, I’ve always appreciated the simplicity of Infiniti’s climate-control gear and the elegance of their analogue clocks.
My final cabin-related comment highlights the snug fit one experiences in the driver’s seat. This doesn’t mean that the vehicle lacks head and legroom—while not extensive, those allowances are plentiful. The snugness I refer to is more “hand in glove,” which emphasizes collaborative driving.
