While the Normal and Snow modes are self-explanatory, the Eco mode seems a little anachronistic to me for a standard-bearer such as this. Indeed, it’s aimed at drivers aspiring to superior fuel efficiency. Green and yellow lights on the dash let you know if you’re driving in an eco-friendly manner – like Pavlov’s bells. And, if your right foot is a little too heavy, a feedback system stiffens the gas pedal to let you know what a bad boy (or girl) you’ve been.
Ok, so the V8’s thirsty personality does somewhat justify the Eco mode. The 12 L / 100 km average at the end of our test confirms this.
However, if you’re looking to save on gas, you’d be better off opting for a Prius instead of an expensive, potent V8 sedan. After all, the M56x reveals its true nature in Sport mode. Compared to the previous generations of the M sedan, which were as insipid as they were run-of-the-mill, this one has so much gusto and flair that you can’t help but open it up!
