Toyota. The name that used to evoke quality, reliability, great resale value, and top picks in every market segment has shockingly fallen from grace. An outstanding reputation built over three decades almost completely crumbled in the span of 18 months.
The impact was two-fold. First, Toyota quickly became vulnerable to criticism toward its designs. In the past, Toyota designers could virtually do as they pleased and were given a pass because of the obvious quality of their products. Lately, however, the Corolla and Camry have been the target of jokes, especially beige Corollas.
But then a funny thing happened: Toyota woke up, put its game face back on, and pulled out (nearly) all the stops. Just look at the next-generation Camry; we still can't believe it. The new Prius v and upcoming Prius c also confirm that Toyota won't relinquish its hybrid leadership anytime soon.
The No.1 Japanese automaker remains a global power that very few competitors can rival. Actually, the only ones that fit the bill are Volkswagen and General Motors. Please, Toyota, if you read this, have the courage to design bolder, more stylish vehicles, and everything will be all right. We promise.
