Track and 911 Carrera S
The new 991 is as gorgeous to gawk at as it is to drive. Its wheelbase, 10 cm longer than the 997, and wider track bring the car into a whole new dimension handling-wise. Through tight, twisting, blind and elevation-changing corners, the 991 was predictable, malleable and manageable. It was difficult to make good use of the 3.8L's 400 hp but its throttle sensitivity was spot on, allowing deliberate and delicate dancing of the car's rear.

Another impressive element that allowed me to stay away from, as much as possible, the snow banks, was the car's communicative and responsive electric steering. With PSM off, Sport Plus engaged and the PDK's shifter in manual, I pendulumed myself from corner to corner and powered out in a nice, solid, stable drift as often as I could.

The 911 was ever willing to play along with my shenanigans, never throwing me off course, remaining balanced and poised through it all. Actually, I think this is the first time that I've preferred a 911 over a Cayman in a performance driving situation. I can't wait to take the 991 for a real test-drive.

Camp4, for real
The great Walter Rohrl said: "The true art of car control is felt in an unstable way." Porsche's Camp4 gives you the necessary tools, theoretical and practical, to experience first-hand what Mr Rohlr meant.

The course I participated in was a condensed version of the basic Camp4 program. The real "school" consist of two driving days with the Porsche Sport Driving School, a Porsche vehicle (shared with another participant), three nights' accommodation at the new Esterel Suites Spa & Lake, meals and all transportation between the hotel and the driving venue.

At $4,995, the course is reasonably priced. I regularly take part in one-day driving schools that charge $500 for track access only with my own car. Here, gas, car, lodging, meals and classes are included. If you want to experience the cars and learn more about yourself and how to drive, this is what you need to do.
