The new 2013 BMW M5 won't benefit from all-wheel drive when it goes on sale next summer, but the automaker was careful enough not to use the word ''never''.

According to M Division head of product development Albert Biermann, if torque figures continue to increase, there could come a point when AWD becomes necessary to effectively handle the massive output and deliver exemplary handling performance in typical M fashion.

Biermann also confirmed that no wagon variant will be available and that the sedan will offer a U.S.-exclusive six-speed manual gearbox. This was not BMW's initial plan, but it looks like the love affair between Americans and sticks was once again too great to ignore.
