Key elements
Throughout the presentations at the 2013 Nissan 360 event, huge emphasis was put on design for each brand. Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President, Chief Creative Officer, Design and Brand Management, was the one who spoke the most. All of the latest cars are an indication that his influence and drive are quite present.
I’m not 100% sure about Nissan’s future design direction, however, I can attest that everything in Infiniti’s pipeline looks nothing short of sensational.
I can’t go on without touching on EVs, and Nissan’s deep commitment to this technology. So far, nearly 75,000 LEAFs have been sold making it the bestselling EV in history. The impact of this car is far reaching and the buying public’s reaction to the car is egging Nissan on to produce more EVs -- and they will.
Nissan is also looking deep into the future where we “auto-centric people” will be replaced by the “mobility-centric” kind. Tomorrow's cars will be more like a valued assistant and less of an item that is always at our disposal.
This ties into autonomous driving cars -- that I had the opportunity to ride in. The whole experience is far less worrisome than I expected but then again, I was in a fully controlled and rehearsed environment during the test. The fact remains that they are coming, and Nissan is at the forefront of this adventure.
The future
The future at Nissan will be defined by innovation that excites. Perhaps in 25 years from now I’ll be able to look back on this time and think that this was a pivotal time for this company, when I once again became a fan of the brand.
