Euro-ness without pretention
Options for the Sportline are limited to a Technology Package and a panorama sunroof. The CC Highline includes the sunroof, while the Highline 3.6L is fully loaded.

The new face
Most obvious to CC admirers, myself included, is the revised nose of the sleek four-door coupe, which now falls in line with the rest of the VW family. The designers took great care to ensure the new appearance projected greater elegance and sophistication while also conforming to corporate expectations.

I think they accomplished their task, in which expensive watches and fountain pens were studied for design inspiration. Despite the fine-jeweled expressiveness and obvious quality of the new grille arrangement, I’m still fond of the distinctive, somewhat more aggressive facade of the first-generation CC.

In addition to frontal reconfiguring, VW designers cleaned up the taillights, making the rear of the vehicle a little tidier. They also sharpened several body creases to better define sculpting by catching and reflecting light more effectively. Overall, the car looks just as sleek and dramatic as always but now exudes a little more class instead of dash.

Behind the wheel
The 2013 CC retains its two powerplants from last year, and that’s a good thing. Both the turbocharged four-banger and the powerful V6 impart performance that inspires the latent enthusiast in all of us while sharp, responsive handling characteristics displace any remaining dormancy.

In contrast to its sleek roofline, the CC provides plenty of headroom in its flawlessly finished cabin. Simplicity and functionality seem to be the guiding ideals that framed the architecture therein and inspired the layout of instruments and controls.

This “lust for logic” results in an environment that is highly sensible yet indulgent and rewarding. I was particularly impressed with the CC’s front seats, which not only look great but live up to their visual invitation to settle in and take on the twisty, narrow roads of the Côte d’Azur.
