Pros: The Kia Rio sedan is a great value in a well-designed and functional package. It returns decent fuel mileage and is definitely one of the smarter choices in the segment

Cons: A buzzy four-cylinder engine may take its toll on you for long highway drives. Also, like many Kias, the suspension is a bit on the firm side and can be choppy at times.

2014 Kia Rio Pricing: The Rio starts at $13,995 for the LX model with a six-speed manual. LX+ models get air conditioning, heated front seats, keyless entry, and Bluetooth for $15,595, and adding an automatic transmission brings the price up to $16,895. LX+ ECO models, featuring smaller, lighter wheels and stop-start technology, start at $17,695. The EX trim builds on LX+ Auto models with added 16-inch alloy wheels, leather trim pieces, UVO infotainment, backup camera, and fog lights for $18,095. SX auto models add 17-inch wheels, sport suspension, and LED lighting for $20,095. Fully loaded SX w/ Navigation models are $22,295.

2014 Kia Rio Economy: Six-speed manual models are rated at 7.5/5.3L (city/highway) per 100 km by Environment Canada. The automatic-equipped Rio returns better highway fuel economy, rated at 7.5/5.2L per 100 km. But, if you buy a Rio with the ECO badge, fuel economy is rated at 7.3/5.3L per 100km.

Improvements and Changes: Going into 2014, changes are limited to some small adjustments to trim packaging and the addition of a centre console armrest.

Don’t Miss: There are suspension differences between lower and upper trims. All are quite firm, with the upper trims being even firmer. Combined with larger wheels, more expensive models are not as pleasant to drive on less than perfect pavement.

2014 Kia Rio Powertrain: A 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque motivates the Rio. Both six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available, depending on trim choice.

Safety: The Kia Rio comes standard with six airbags (front, front seat-mounted side, and side curtain) available on all trims. Vehicle Stability Management and Electronic Stability Control come as standard on all trims as well.

Comparables: The Rio sedan plays in a crowded (but dwindling) sandbox, fighting for toys with the Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Sonic, Hyundai Accent Sedan, and soon-to-be discontinued Nissan Versa Sedan.
