Limited 2018 edition will be the most powerful Mustang ever produced

On April 17, the iconic Ford Mustang celebrated its 54 years of existence. Four years after the launch of the classic muscle car, a new race-tuned performance edition was unleashed by the American automaker, dubbed the Cobra Jet. Its engine, which went by the same name, was not actually designed specifically for the new Mustang version. No matter, it made its mark and then some among performance car fans. Truly, the Cobra Jet is a legendary car.

50 years on, Ford has decided to revive the model with a very special limited-edition tribute version. Seeing as how the original debuted in 1968, the company will produce 68 units of the new Cobra Jet.

According to Ford, the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet edition will be the fastest Mustang ever produced. It will be able to complete the quarter-mile in just 8.5 seconds, at a speed of 150 mph. Remember that in 2016, Ford had actually produced a Cobra Jet variant, though in a highly limited run of just 50 units.

The 2018 Cobra Jet will run on a 5.2L Coyote V8 engine and feature a four-link rear suspension produced by the Ford Performance team. The car will come in red or black and sport special badging to commemorate the 50h anniversary.

If you’re thinking of reserving one of the 68 units that will be produced, you’ll have to wait until the summer; only then will Ford announce details regarding the order process. We’re hoping obviously that Canadian customers will be able to participate. The lucky ones who do end up getting their hands on a 2018 Cobra Jet will then be able to participate in various racing events, since the car will be certified by the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) and other organizations for competition.
