It may get the 2.5L 4-cylinder already powering the CX-9 and Mazda6

It’s a week for leaks in the automotive domain. First we learned that the Jeep Wrangler will be offered in diesel configuration in 2019. Now, secretly obtained information is indicating that the Mazda CX-5 SUV will benefit from a more robust turbo engine, something many have been clamouring for for years.

Since the model’s debut in 2014, in fact, a main point of criticism regarding the CX-5 has bene its relative lack of pep.

This should soon be a thing of the past, however; the engine destined for the 2019 edition is the 2.5L 4-cylinder recently introduced in the Mazda6 and CX-9 models. With an output of around 250 hp, this new powertrain should bring the CX-5 up to speed with others in its segment.

The Wrangler leak came from documents sent to dealers to be used to place orders for the 2019 model-year, and the new Mazda leak is from the same type of source.

The document also indicates that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be integrated on all versions of the CX-5 in 2019.

A more-powerful and more-connected CX-5 is on the way, then, which should help an already-popular model gain even more ground in its category. It’s also interesting to note that this new engine will arrive in the model ahead of the 2.2L diesel engine we’ve been promised since the debut of the current generation of the CX-5, in May 2017.

The boost in power for its compact SUV is in line with what the company has done with its MX-5 for 2019.

It’s all good news for Mazda fans, who might have been feeling a bit of a kickstart was needed to reinvigorate that zoom-zoom feeling!
