BMW still offers fun-to-drive models, but has the company strayed a bit from its roots with advances in technology?

Yes, there was a whole range of Mini products on site, and I used the opportunity to reacquaint myself with a few models, starting with this S version with a flop top. To my great delight, the model I tried was equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, which only adds to the pleasure of driving a car that is already pretty darn fun to scoot around in. Remember that the S version benefits from a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which offers 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque with this model.

A few different things went through my mind during my short reconnaissance of the BMW Performance Centre area. First, I noted that the Mini has become more “conventional” over with a few generations. It's been a little over 20 years since BMW revived it, and the uniqueness of the early creations is gone.

For example, the model has gained almost 200 kg in weight in 20 years. It's also a bit longer and wider.

However, the fun behind the wheel is still there and since that is an increasingly rare quality in the industry, the Mini remains an interesting toy. And why not a convertible version while you’re at it? Fun, indeed.
