The Government of Canada’s Minister of Public Works and Government Services confirmed the investment of 212 million dollars for the restoration of Montreal’s Champlain Bridge. The contribution follows a request for financing made by Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated as part of a reconditioning program spanning 10 years and due to begin in 2009.

As with most bridges built in the 1960s, the Champlain Bridge is regularly restored in order to ensure its safety. In addition, a team of experts also conducts annual inspections, and specialized monitoring instruments have been installed on the bridge’s structure in order to immediately detect and respond to any anomaly.

Although the bridge is safe and secure for all Canadians and travellers, it requires additional repair work over the next 10 years to ensure that it remains safe and secure for everyone using it, and that it can continue to carry the volume of traffic forecast.

Specifically, repair works will include the restoration and reinforcement of the bridge’s components, from the pier caps that support the deck to the replacement of the deck joints and the reinforcement and post-tensioning of beams. These repairs will provide additional support for the bridge’s structure.

Disruptions for commuters, truckers and travellers will be minimal, as most of the repairs will be carried out under the bridge and outside of peak traffic hours.

In addition to rehabilitation projects, Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated and the Ministère des Transports du Québec will soon be tendering a pre-feasibility study to examine long-term options for the Champlain Bridge that will allow the federal government to make sound decisions for the future.
