Like the Chevrolet Volt, the Karma is an extended-range vehicle that relies on 403 hp worth of battery power and a 260-hp gasoline engine that acts as a generator. The Fisker is much more exciting than the Volt, however, and according to autocar.co.uk, Fisker claims having secured 3,000 orders for the car.

The first production Karma will be delivered this month to Leonardo DiCaprio. Al Gore and Colin Powell will also get their hands on one soon afterwards.

Cars are being assembled in Finland at a snail’s pace right now, at 5 units a week, but production will ramp up to 300 a week from November on. That means the Karma is sold out until early 2012.

A shooting-brake version of the Karma is scheduled to be presented at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show in September. Saloon and convertible models will eventually follow. A smaller four-door model that will rival the BMW 3 Series is also said to be in the works, and should turn up sometime in 2013; it will cost about half the price of a $100,000 Karma and Fisker is expecting to sell 100,000 of them a year.
