A new race track to be built in Ontario?

|
From grandprix.com & Niagara Falls Review

The Niagara Falls Review has been busy in recent days investigating a story about the development of a $200-million, 65,000-seat international motor speedway in Fort Erie in the area.

It all started with the publication of the article in international trade journal Professional Motorsport Circuit, written by Azhar Mohammad - executive director of Emirates Consulting, a Toronto-based subsidiary of Kuwaiti-based investment bank Bayt Al Mal Investment Co., that is financially backing the project of the new race circuit in the region of Niagara Falls.

"The team was spearheaded by multi-NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon, flanked by Paxton Waters Architecture, Derek Daly Design, and Philips Engineering, and supported by a host of local and international strategic partners," the Niagara Falls Review says.

Last October, plans were announced for a motor speedway on lands near the QEW, between Gilmore Road and Bowen Road.

According to the article, the speedway, which Mohammad described as the Canadian Motor Speedway, will benefit from its unique location -just six kilometres from the Canadian/ U. S. border and relatively easy access from many urban centres.

Being only 10 minutes from world-famous Niagara Falls, Mohammad said the speedway would become North America's motorsport entertainment destination.

He said the facility is set to open for racing in the summer of 2011 and has already sparked the interest of major race-sanctioning organizations that are keen to capitalize on the Canadian and eastern U.S. fan base.

However, the Bayt Al Mal project is one of three, separate proposals to build a motor speedway on rural lands along the Queen Elizabeth Way between Niagara Falls and Fort Erie.

The Review learned through sources last week another investment group is preparing to bring a proposal to Niagara Falls council in the coming weeks to develop a racetrack on a 93- hectare parcel of land on Sodom Road.

Ken Mech, manager of current planning for the City of Niagara Falls, said a group of "Ontario investors" want to build a 5.6- kilometre road course on land bounded by Bossert Road, Sodom Road and the QEW that could be available for IRL IndyCar racing.
