ZAP announced today that its XEBRA city truck now offers a range of up to 100 miles (160 kilometers) thanks to a new lithium battery management system. Laboratory tests have allowed the company to achieve this feat. The advanced battery management system, developed by Danish technology firm Lithium Balance (which signed an exclusive distribution agreement with ZAP), delivers as much as five times the efficiency and performance of traditional lead-acid batteries.

After working with ZAP for several months, Lithium Balance believes this to be one of the few ventures today that has a serious near-term business plan to mass produce electric vehicles. The XEBRA is said to be the perfect entry and test-bed for this new battery technology and will pave the way for the development of ZAP's highway capable electric vehicles.

ZAP recently delivered over 500 of its XEBRA sedans and trucks, adding to the 100,000+ units already sold in 75 countries all over the world. The American green car company is also working with Lotus Engineering on the development of an electric SUV called ZAP-X.
