ZAP, one of the electric car pioneers, came at the Chicago Auto Show (February 9-18) to introduce, through local dealer Rick Sbragia, different versions of its XEBRA model, a small, ground-breaking electric vehicle.

ZAP is well known in the transportation industry for its various green technologies, including innovative and efficient vehicles powered by hydrogen, electricity, fuel cells, ethanol and hybrid systems. The company has already delivered some 90,000 energy-efficient vehicles to consumers in more than 75 countries around the world.

Simple and cheap
The XEBRA costs about a penny a mile to drive and it can be plugged into any household outlet thanks to the onboard charger that powers the 110-volt DC battery. Weighing approximately 1,800 lbs, this small urban vehicle has a four-passenger or 500-lb max capacity. It has a 40-km range and can reach a speed of up to 65 kph while producing zero emissions. The engine runs on direct current (DC) from a lead acid battery. The price? US$10,000.
