Manual-equipped EL should prove a safe used-car bet
Check the engine coolant levels, ensuring the coolant is full and fresh – not low and dirty. Some owners have reported overheating and climate control problems, which could result from low coolant levels. Avoid any models that exhibit signs of engine oil in the coolant system, which could indicate a bad head gasket.

If possible, avoid earlier EL models with the automatic transmission. Though not incredibly widespread, it seems that earlier ELs may have automatics that suffer from questionable reliability. If you need an automatic transmission, be sure it shifts cleanly, smoothly and without any slippage, shuddering or “clunking”. If you don’t need it, opt for a used model with the 5-speed stick, which will prove more fun to drive.

Finally, check your used EL candidate for any Check Engine or Airbag lights illuminated in the instrument cluster. A computer scan at your local Acura or Honda dealership can reveal any stored “trouble codes”, which could reveal a problem.

The Verdict: A used Acura EL with the manual transmission should prove the most reliable model. A check by an Acura-trained mechanic is ideal for maximum peace of mind in your purchase – though a clean, well-maintained model that’s had its service schedule adhered to can be bought with confidence.
