Folks, I know two people who survived a medium-speed crash and a two-revolution roll into a ditch without injury and then had to scramble for their lives because the sport-cute they were in came to rest upside-down in three feet of cold water.

I mean, where's the Transport Canada or Insurance Institute of Highway Safety test for a vehicle's ability to stop its occupants from drowning when it's on its roof? What kind of safety establishment have we got here, anyway?

Well, it's the best in the world and the most proficient in history, but it's never going to satisfy a majority of consumers in Canada and the United States because it's never going to create an absolute test for absolute vehicle safety ratings, let alone an absolutely safe vehicle.

There are simply too many variables to measure, let alone to test. You can test a vehicle's ability to withstand an off-set frontal crash, but how do you test for a briefcase that bounces out of the back seat of one of the vehicles and knocks the driver out long enough so that he swerves out of control and slams into a third vehicle and kills someone?

It's a very worthwhile impulse to want to hold the car companies' feet to the fire on vehicle safety so they keep their safety experts thinking of ways to save our sorry butts, and we should listen to anyone who wants to run a crash test when they report their results.

You should listen to everyone because you might hear something that pertains directly to the way you drive or the route you take or the number of passengers you carry or something that will give you the slight safety edge that might save your life. Knowledge is more than power here, it could be life.
