If the Alfa coupe does reach production, don't expect to see the concepts 10cc increase to the Maserati engines 4,244 cc displacement. After all, it wouldn't make sense for the lesser Alfa to upstage the Maserati brand. What you could expect though, is a version of the Maserati Cambiocorsa transmission (F1 in Ferrari-speak) Alfa calls Selespeed. It's a 6-speed electro-hydraulic sequential command system actuated via paddle shifters on each side of the steering wheel, offering lightning quick shift response and the safety of both hands gripping the steering wheel for optimal control.
Speaking of optimal control, all-wheel drive is the layout of choice, but Giugiaro is quick to point out that the Brera could be adapted to a more conventional rear-wheel drive configuration if produced. Giorgetto also states that the coupes scissor-type doors were designed with production in mind, but more conventional doors would not detract from its glorious lines. Despite its sizable exterior - 4,390 mm (172.8 in) long, 1,890 mm (74.4 in) wide and 1,290 mm (50.8 in) high - its rear seats will only be suitable for two kids or a weekend's worth of luggage.
Will Alfa Romeo build it? That's hard to say, especially while parent company Fiat Auto is currently only managing to tread water in a downward spiraling whirlpool of financial debt. Nevertheless, the car would be priced about $20,000 to $30,000 less than the comparable Maserati coupe, which would bode well for its prospective sales. Only time will tell if it comes to fruition.
