2021 COMPACT SUV OF THE YEAR

Mazda CX-5 - Nissan Rogue - Toyota RAV4

While subcompact SUVs are getting a lot of attention these days, the niche just above it is pretty darn hot as well. In fact, for young families, these Swiss Army knives of the road are perfect. Again, the competition here is fierce and the three 2021 finalists should all be on your list of vehicles to consider.

The Toyota RAV4 is the best selling... and the most diverse! In fact, it's the only one of the three finalists available in both hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The Mazda CX-5 should be considered by those who value driving pleasure, while the Nissan Rogue is a completely transformed SUV since its arrival in fall 2020.

2021 MIDSIZE SUV OF THE YEAR

Kia Telluride - Subaru Ascent - Toyota Highlander

Extended families, this category is for you! Within this segment are officially housed the alternatives to minivans, although the reality is they will never reach the same levels of versatility as the likes of the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna.

Despite the presence of two-row SUVs eligible for consideration, it was the three-row models that appealed most to our panel of automotive reviewers. The Subaru Ascent is probably the most similar to driving a full-size sedan. The Toyota Highlander is reassuring to buyers looking for a reliable, trouble-free vehicle, but its limited third-row space is a weakness in our eyes. As for the Kia Telluride, its massive design and luxury SUV finish are just two reasons why the brand's largest vehicle is so popular.
