Former world rally champion, Pikes Peak competitor and former candidate to the FIA Presidency Ari Vatanen will contest the third round of the Andros Trophy ice racing series in Alpe d’Huez in France this weekend.

Vatanen, 58, will be sharing the wheel of the No. 17 Series 1 BMW of the Saintéloc Racing team with the other regular drivers.

Interestingly, Vatanen contested the 24 Hours of Chamonix in 1990, driving a BMW alongside Max Mamers, the current promoter of the Andros Trophy.

“I may not be as quick as I used to be, because of my age but I haven’t lost the feeling of driving of slippery ground,” said Vatanen during a press conference.

“However, I have to get used to the four-wheel steering system. But I think everything will go well and the objective is to have some fun. It is serious racing but in a fun atmosphere. There are some very well known drivers and other that are relatively unknown, but everybody here is very quick on the ice,” Vatanen said.

Thirty drivers are entered in the race, including the 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve who will be behind the wheel of the No. 3B Skoda Fabia Silhouette car.
