Audi and freakin’ lasers

Just when we thought Audi couldn’t get any cooler, we’ve just learned that the new R8 (which is awesome already) will have optional laser high-beam headlights available.

Yes, you read that correctly: lasers. And while this system first appeared in the summer of 2014 on the Audi R8 LMX, and before that the Audi R18 e-tron at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this will be the first time it’s made available on a production vehicle.

Now, I’ll be learning all about this brand new lighting technology from Audi at the source in Ingolstadt later this week (check back early next week for more details about the freakin’ lasers at Audi), but what’s even cooler is how Audi has been testing out these new lighting systems.

Located underneath the 11-storey Audi Group building, the brand new lighting competence centre features a 120-metre matte-black-painted tunnel that allows Audi engineers to properly test their lighting systems such as high-beam and camera-based lighting assistance -- and, of course, their brand new laser high-beams as well.

I’m also hoping to catch a glimpse of the Willy Wonka-esque tunnel upon our visit to the Audi Group lighting competence centre in Ingolstadt this week. So, make sure you follow along on my laser-lead journey with @MsMirandaL on Twitter and Instagram.
