More than just a safety feature that helps enhance performance and save fuel, Audi's Space Frame (ASF) Technology has just been recognized as having made a significant contribution to Europe's economic growth and competitiveness. Praise for the technology comes this time from the European Patent Office, who has called Audi AG the European inventor of the year. The award comes as part of a contest which is intended to further Europe's image as a 'Continent of Inventors'.

ASF Technology first appeared in 1993 as the body of an Audi A8. The technology makes heavy use of aluminum and employs strategically-placed load-bearing panels throughout the vehicle's inner structure. The end result is a notably lighter and stiffer frame that offers above-average impact performance. The reduced weight also makes the car more nimble and fuel efficient.

"With Audi Space Frame technology, Audi opened up a new dimension in lightweight automotive design," says Heinrich Timm, who heads lightweight and aluminum design at Audi. "The Audi Space Frame results in a car body that is not only stronger and safer than a steel body, but also significantly lighter. This is a central aspect for reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions" he adds.
