2022 COMPACT SUV OF THE YEAR

Mazda CX-5 - Nissan Rogue - Toyota RAV4

For families who need a little more space, the compact SUV category is a good fit and not necessarily more expensive than the subcompact category, at least in some cases. And the 2022 finalists are proving that their popularity isn't just a flash in the pan.

The Toyota RAV4 is already THE best-selling vehicle in the country, while the Nissan Rogue is a serious contender since its redesign. As for the Mazda CX-5, the minor improvements of 2022 won't hurt it, as it's mostly known for its superior driving pleasure.

2022 MIDSIZE SUV OF THE YEAR

Hyundai Palisade - Jeep Grand Cherokee/L - Kia Telluride

Among the mid-size SUVs, there are models with two rows and those with a third row to accommodate larger families or even to help out in a pinch, on occasion. And unsurprisingly, it's three three-row SUVs that remain in the running for the category award.

This year, the Kia Telluride is the only one of the trio of 2021 finalists to return. Neither the Subaru Ascent and Toyota Highlander, both excellent vehicles, made it back to the finalists’ circle this year. Hyundai, though, will be happy to know that the Telluride's cousin, the Hyundai Palisade, did make it, as did the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, which can also be ordered in stretched L format (thus featuring three rows of seats).
