Ford was out in full force, with a huge selection of 07 Ford and Lincoln models. The new Ford Edge was on display, as was the MKZ (the Lincoln formerly known as the Zephyr) and Navigator. Ford is spot on in terms of new vehicle styling- last time I saw so much chrome was in a jewelry store. The Navigator and Edge were instant hits at the show.
The show-stopping GT, Fords Ferrari slaying super car, was also on display alongside the Shelby GT 500 and a selection of other Mustang models. The GT was sectioned off, and bibs were not provided.
It was definitely a great year for GM roadsters, and 2007 plans to see the Solstice and Sky models from Pontiac and Saturn heat up with the addition of an available turbocharged 260 horsepower engine. The Saturn Sky was on display, as was the Corvette Z06, both finished in ticket-me-yellow paint jobs. I'm glad I got my photos early, because it was hard to get near these two machines for most of the day. A selection of Saab vehicles was also on display for those after a little Scandinavian luxury performance.
Suzuki proudly showed off its new SX4- a compact and fun-loving all-wheel-drive machine, parked alongside one of the company's ATV offerings. Suzuki builds a selection of vehicles other than road cars, so years of engineering and technological expertise from other company divisions are available for use in its passenger car lineup.
The new Dodge Nitro was parked alongside the rest of the attitude-packed lineup, its radical and controversial style instantly becoming the topic of conversation throughout the show.
"Only Dodge could get away with a vehicle that looked like that" one attendee told me. "It's hideous. But I want one!" I couldn't agree more.
The long-anticipated RDX Turbo took centre stage in the Acura display, flanked by their stylish TL and RL flagship sedan. The RDX hits showrooms this month and features Acura's first-ever turbocharged engine, which is coupled with their modestly-labeled Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system.
For a more compact and powerful AWD experience, the venerable WRX STI sat atop a pedestal in the Subaru tent. The team was excited to explain how fast and stunning a machine the STI is, and were fully versed on all of Subaru's rally-racing accomplishments. This stuff isn't scripted either- these kids know what they're talking about.
If you're in the Barrie area next September, I'd highly recommend checking out the show. Enthusiast or not, it offers something for everybody. Aside from the scope of the autoshow and the many carmakers and aftermarket manufacturers represented, the student's efforts and passion to pull the event off impress just as much. They all get a great big "A+" and smiley face sticker from me.
