A Bentley Motors apprentice team has won a special "Spirit of Greenpower" award for its performance in the Greenpower Corporate Challenge, which took place at the Goodwood race circuit last week.

The nine members of the team, who dedicated all their nights and weekends of the last 10 months to this project, designed, engineered and built an electric-powered car called Continental DC.

Greenpower is a series of events which aims to promote greater interest in young people to follow careers in the fields of engineering and technology.

The vehicle uses a 240-watt wheelchair motor fed by a pair of 12-volt lead-acid batteries. It produces 0.5 horsepower and 5.1 lb-ft of torque. Yet, the Continental DC can reach speeds of up to 64 kph thanks to an extremely lightweight carbon fiber chassis and low-resistance tires. Power is sent to a single wheel through a Nuvinci CVP transmission. Needless to say that this car produces zero emissions.
