Fuel efficiency ratings may be undeniably useful, but they don’t give you a real idea of a vehicle’s capacity to get you from A to B on a single tank.

That’s why VW’s Norwegian division organized an original Facebook contest, using Google Maps and StreetView to turn the E6 (the equivalent of Route 66) into a virtual roulette board designed to prove just how fuel-efficient the Golf BlueMotion really is.

Knowing the car would leave from North Oslo, participants were asked to place a bet on how far the VW could go on a single tank of fuel. When the registration period ended, the Golf took to the road.

Over 50,000 people followed its progress in real time to find out if they’d be the lucky winners of a new four-wheel toy. The car rolled to a halt 1,570 kilometres later, the equivalent of an Oslo-Paris road trip.
