BMW plans to offer plug-in hybrid versions of its most popular models according to a report by Automotive News. When? That remains to be seen.
Today in Miramas, France, the German automaker is introducing a plug-in hybrid prototype of the best-selling 3 Series. It combines a 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor to provide a zero-emission range of about 35 kilometres.
BMW also has plans to give the plug-in hybrid treatment to the X5 crossover and other unspecified models. Electric versions from the MINI and Rolls-Royce brands are another possibility, a spokesman for BMW said.
Already, customers have the opportunity to order the all-electric BMW i3 as well as the i8 plug-in hybrid supercar.
