Under the floorboards is a 36 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, produced by LIO Energy systems, a joint venture between CODA and Lishen Power Battery, that stores 50 percent more energy than the LEAF's.

In stark contrast to the elaborately futuristic cockpit designs of most EVs, the CODA's cabin is oddly frumpy and devoid of any video-game wizardry. Other than the console-located large gear selector button that's a cheap knock-off of Jaguar's, its dour and cheap-plastic frugality is completely devoid of anything resembling character. Presumably, those are some of the things to be sorted out once the company's found its stride.

Seats are comfortable though. The short drive route (about ten minutes) wasn't enough to form any sort of fair assessment of the CODA's handling, although it's safe to declare it rather soft. There's a gauge to let you know when the battery's being drawn upon, and when the regeneration is replenishing energy.

Despite its flaws, the CODA is a compelling vehicle – proving that continuously improving technology may one day lay our range anxieties to rest.
