Awards and more awards
The EnerGuide awards, very important for the environment, are a perpetual battle for manufacturers. The design contest recognizes the young designers from across Canada; we shouldn't be worried about the future, as ideas abound from a great deal of rising artists. And finally, the prizes so coveted by the industry, the cars of the year which are issued by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (the AJAC).
My favorites
For this show, DaimlerChrysler impressed me for three reasons, three very different things. The first is Mr. Reid Bigland for this honesty, his implication and his knowledge of his projects and products. He's the only speaker I saw that did his speech without any electronic aids, reminders or notes of any kind. The second reason is the Jeep Gladiator (those who know me will say: "Yeah, yeah, it's because it's a truck)... and finally, the third reason is the Dodge Challenger.
The evening before the show, we were invited by the company to an Ontarian tavern; a casual evening, nothing really official, so we weren't expecting anything in particular. But they showed us the Challenger, and we were able to look at it, touch it and sit in it. They popped the hood, but what really melted the hearts of the nostalgic, passionate and real 'car guys' among us, is when they fired up the engine. Yes, right there in the room, a few stabs at the gas pedal, and the sound created a general hush: everyone stopped talking.
